As cardinals gather to elect a new pope, I found Philip Shenon's new book, "Jesus Wept," to be fascinating reading! A biography of popes and history of Catholic Church from WW2 (Pius XII) to Pope Francis. Highly recommended!

Happy that both Eduardo and JD started this work while they were at @umich!

Am thinking a lot about religious & cultural change. Really enjoying “God, Guns, and Missionaries: The Making of the Modern Hindu Identity” by @waatcoconut.bsky.social! Discovered at Bahrisons in Delhi last month. Smart, extensively researched, insightful, beautifully written. 1/2 #EconSky

🔎 Robustness:
We rule out pre-trends and military service effects.
The results hold after controlling for time trends associated with geographic & pre-war economic conditions.

🧰 Methodology:
We combine WWII procurement data (a unique resource!) with Indian Census data (1911-2011), digitizing district-level employment records.
Our causal approach: a shift-share design based on pre-war industrial structure.
