in your virtual office, this cyber
sitting room with Zoom background decor, that
I hate your corporate culture surveys.
I hate your free text response boxes
with 300 character counts and
your unlimited arrogance to believe in
any answer for “Why would you like to work here?”
That isn’t: “I need money.”

You expect me to grin alligators
and nibble shit as if it’s Almas caviar but
I’ve been treading water far too long
to tilt my chin up any higher.
I realize you’d prefer I do
my gliding ballet, building up
your empire en pointe.
But I am too sick of this Lindy Hop Charleston Swing,
this game of python and mouse
to jitter any further on this false pretense.

You, your self, seems real enough.
You standard-issue from behind the screen.
So, won’t you permit me authenticity too
and I’ll let my thinning hair down for a while?

in bed sighing over our mess.

But there’s still a crumb of us
on the edge of my jaw, at the fringes of
my shoulders collapsed against each other

I’ll never have again.
Skin taught to knuckles begging
to break open like a seedling
cast into barren land.

the enemy to lovers trope.
The will-they-won’t-they couple
of barely even friends stricken by feeling.
It’s the potential for the antagonist
in us all to be redeemed.
Unlikely pairs would taste as sweet
when warring philosophies congeal
into a fresh worldview, softening
the hard lens of life
in black-and-white like icicles
watery and reflecting new
shapes of the world.

What-Will-Be dozes comfortably on
the other side of the eclipse;
the underbelly of creation
constantly obscured by thinking–
humanity’s most hallowed gift and
most intimate prison.

There is in fact a way out
of this dungeon of the mind:
An ageless ladder made of silk
wafting in the wind like
tender leaves on the crests of trees like
wisps of air threading between treetops,
their leaves wafting in the wind.

And clambering up this fragile escape
reveals the eclipse’s edge; where
sunlight winks and presses
through cellulose and membrane
forcing a new perspective on
the spectrum of green on
the continuum of the newborn and still
to be changed. A blank page
all at once dismissive and
elated at the prospect of
becoming whole.

Believe it or not, I’ve built my entire day around buying a single scoop of ice cream. Mind you, it’s ice cream from Salt & Straw. And, double mind you, it’s The Best Flavor: bananas foster with candied pecans– pronounced whichever way you’d like as it always translates to: time well spent. 🍨 💕

Weary fingers still at work tipping the piping ember above its collection plate. Between sips of tar and vapor, you lend me a sigh and nod of knowing; that I’m still where you have left me, eyes tearing from the ashes that fall like snow.
