I think you're confusing courtesy with respect. Respect conveys high esteem or deference, which is earned, not inherently given, especially when someone is give a position of responsibility for the wellbeing of others.

To be clear, there ARE viruses that are airborne. There was no given that COVID was not. Until we knew specifically how it spread, we needed to take precautions to minimize it regardless.

The thing most people seem to forget is that virology experts were trying to figure out the parameters of the virus on the fly. It took time to figure out exactly how it was spread. In the meantime, we needed to take precautions to minimize its spread. COVID didn't come with an instruction manual.
