Europe represents a significant share of startup value, for earlier stage companies.

But startup ecosystems are dictated by the power law. Only 0.01% of companies reach a valuation of $1 trillion, and those (US) companies represent 34% of all venture-backed enterprise value.

The US is the global HQ of startups & VC, and there is unsurprisingly a significant difference in the amount of VC raised in the US and Europe.

Broken down by funding stage though, the differences are particularly stark.

Later stage startups in the US are raising 567% more capital than in Europe.

Venture-backed companies compound.

The Magnificent 7 invested a total of $49B in startups in 2024 alone, not via acquisitions, as venture capital.

That’s more than all VC into China or the EU27.

An extra venture ecosystem for free.
February 27, 2025 at 9:13 AM
It’s a fact that venture-backed businesses are a major job creation engine.

In the US almost *a quarter* of all jobs are at VC backed companies.

In Europe it’s under 2%.

💵 Unpacking Europe’s GDP gap with the US

An $11 trillion nominal GDP gap between Europe and the US has been widely shared.

But taking a closer look it’s not as clear cut.

Currency exchange rate and national debt are major factors, though productivity is a meaningful challenge.

Europe matches US in unicorn efficiency 🦄🇪🇺

European startups produce billion-dollar companies at the same rate as US ones when measured per dollar invested.

Same output for the same input - just less attention.
