Lieut. John Binney was lost at sea Nov 24 1835 when HM Packet Star was “thrown on her beam ends and dismasted,” between Falmouth, England & Halifax. 12 men died in the wreck.

Born on this day in 1769: Winckworth Allan. A son of one of Halifax's first settler families, He owned a store on Henderson's wharf in Newcastle, NB. He died July 30 1834. He is memorialized in St Paul's Church, but is buried in Kensal Green, one of London's "Magnificent Seven" cemeteries.

Everett Edward Elliott was born 15 November 1888, in Edmonton, London, England. He was 23 years, 5 months old when he "died on duty" as a trimmer aboard the Titanic. His body was number 317, recovered by the Minia. Fairview Lawn

James T. Manning was a police officer who lived on John St. He died of TB two months short of his 29th birthday, on Nov 13, 1891. His prominent and sizeable stone in Holy Cross was paid for by friends mourning his early death. Holy Cross

Edward Cunard was the younger brother of shipping magnate Samuel Cunard. He worked for his brother as a master mariner. He died November 12, 1851. His sons Henry, Thomas, Frederick & James are also listed on his ledger stone in Camp Hill.

Canadian Merchant Navy Master William F Butler was lost at sea when the SS Port of Dalhousie was sunk by the German submarine UB-10, March 19 1916. He was 63.

Albert Kynman was a Chief Petty Officer on the HMCS Esquimault, sunk by a torpedo from U-190 April 19 1945, just outside Halifax Harbour. It was the last Canadian ship lost in the war. Camp Hill.

Private John Richard Lambert was 18 when he signed up for No 2 Construction Battalion, Canada's only all-Black unit in the First World War. He died of TB while lifting rail track in New Brunswick to be shipped to France. Camp Hill.

RCAF Sgt Pilot Glenn Herbert Isralson was from Saskatchewan. He died when his Kittyhawk airplane crashed into Bedford Basin during a snowstorm March 10 1942. He is buried in Fort Massey Cemetery, Halifax

In March 1943 Pilot Officer Donald Weston Frazee's Beaufighter stalled & ditched off Malta. He survived, only to be shot down & killed less than 2 months later. He is commemorated on the Malta Memorial in Valetta and in Camp Hill Cemetery

Over The Top: breaking a stalemate by sending waves of soldiers out of the trenches & straight towards the enemy. Almost all were killed, including Sgt Edwin Walter Dorey. Christ Church Cemetery, Dartmouth.

RCAF Pilot Officer Bruce Henry Webb Stevens was serving with RAF's No. 70 Squadron. He went out over Italy in a Vickers Wellington & never returned. 4 RAF officers went missing with him. He is memorialized at the Alamein War Memorial, Egypt and on his family's stone in Camp Hill.

#OTD in 2012
Paramedic John Michael Rossiter was killed when a 20-metre oak tree was blown from Camp Hill Cemetery and crushed his ambulance during Hurricane Juan. This plaque marks the spot.

Leonard Hickman was born in Birmingham UK in 1887. He immigrated to Canada in 1907. He was Chief Petty Officer aboard the HMS Repulse, a Renown-Class Battlecruiser. He died of accidental drowning #OTD Aug 10 1924.
