It’s #RockinTuesday! No shortage of rocks on the AT. I was forewarned of this section in MD by my shuttle driver. I assured him we have rocks in VA. He laughed. I found out why.

A particularly rocky section of the Appalachian Trail in Maryland. The rocks are anywhere from “large dog” to “hippopotamus” size. A nearby tree has a white blaze, the rocks are medium gray, many with light green lichen attached. There’s no bare earth to be seen, just rocks and more rocks.

It’s #Scape day! The first time I encountered a trail that had suffered a wildfire I expected devastation. There was, but there was also beauty.

The trail is covered with pine needles. On either side the soil is black from a recent fire. As I hiked I could smell the charred wood and foliage. There are evergreens in the distance that were uneffected.

One more for the #BlueSkyArtShow theme of #silhouette. Taken from the AT near Hay Rock. Sometimes the things that catch my eye surprise me. Another sunrise shot. The orange glow behind the towers made me think of electricity radiating from within the lines.

Today’s theme for #BlueSkyArtshow is #silhouette. The Peaks of Otter just before sunrise on an AT section hike in VA last year. One advantage to being old and awake at 5 AM is getting an early start and catching moments like this.

An abandoned Air Force radar tower sits atop Apple Orchard Mountain. The Appalachian Trail passes right by it. Today it’s used by the FAA to track commercial airline traffic. Virginia Tech also has a weather station there.

It’s #Caturday… Ringo did not appreciate me criticizing his skill with eyeliner. He had the gall to challenge me to try putting on eyeliner with no thumbs. The audacity.

National War Correspondents Memorial Arch, Crampton Gap, MD. (1896) Backpacking the AT through Maryland has been a favorite section so far because of all the historical sites right on the trail.

It’s #Stunday! Every year for my birthday I go backpacking somewhere I’ve never been that will have a sunset view. This weekend it was part of the Uwharrie Trail. This scrub pine was irritating me as it blocked the view, until I caught this shot.
