@thias actually, emacs doesn't -- when it displays the characters, it does it correctly, using the variant selectors. But when you put point at the character and ask what its codepoint is, emacs says the same thing for both, which is also correct.

I do see now that M-x describe-char will say […]

...and what's interesting about thinking about such esoteric text editor behavior is that one realizes many of those ideas could be implemented in emacs.
