The text is powerful, poetic and really strikes an important figurative note. But that’s not real life.

IRL it will be seen by most Americans as a hollow, self-indulgent waste of taxpayer resources. And a day later not a single problem anyone in the country is facing will have improved one bit.

Make it a ceremonial space for immigrants to be sworn in as U.S. citizens. Call it the WH Democracy Center. Hold programs on civics, summits w/pro-democracy groups from around the world, keynote speeches by real Nobel prize winners…promote what he’s against. Greater value and a more meaningful FU.

Grand gestures have purpose. Not suggesting we act like he wasn’t a hateful megalomaniac. But if you strip off all of the stain of him and a solid structure still stands, convert it into a useful space that stands for something he hates. Or else you’re just staging a very expensive cathartic moment.

It’s about feeding their nativist base stuff they can share, while reinforcing that they’re of them / for them. It also drives outrage among decent human beings, which again is celebrated as a virtuous end goal.

This mindless, hateful crap is win, win, win.

Unless it’s structurally unsound it probably makes more sense to spend just enough to change the look, get rid of the excessive gaudiness and make a point of publicizing that the White House definitely needed more space, it just needs to be more classy & tasteful. (Because the place IS quite small.)
