Almost 40 years on and women are still being murdered, raped, oppressed and attacked by men - some of them the very ones who should be protecting us, like police officers. And we are still being told we should be more careful. Why has society normalised violence against women?

In 1978, women at a public meeting in West Yorkshire were told by police that we should observe a curfew to avoid attack by the Yorkshire Ripper. I pointed out that then we were sitting ducks, waiting in our homes for him to break in. The curfew should have been for men.
