What is happening would be as clear as day if you saw it in another country. No one abroad is confused; no one reading (accurate) history in the future will have any trouble understanding what is happening.
The ruling party wants to arrest members of the opposition party who are trying to stop them from rigging the mid-term elections.
This is not something which happens in a democracy. MAGA is trying to create a one party dictatorship.

I don't think you can go wrong if you have compassion for ordinary people and skepticism/hostility towards the powerful, no matter what anyone involved believes
