This win belongs to the citizens of DC and its cultural institutions who all came out to express their support and concern after the Mayor's proposed budget cut the project completely.

The price was $105M, but in the last few months they have thrown out multiple other higher numbers saying the cost had increased but could not convincingly explain why.

After so many years of careful planning, this drastic and last second change to the DC Archives’ plan only makes sense with one explanation: Is the Mayor funding her new stadium with our city’s heritage?

The demolition of the site has begun, architectural plans are completed, an MOU with UDC has been signed, zoning and permits have been approved, and a general contractor has been hired. Any new structure on that site will have to start this process again from scratch.

This proposal is a major waste of resources. The move throws away tens of millions of dollars of work spent to build a new State Archives at UDC:

Putting all of the city’s history into a separate warehouse, where no one can access it, makes no sense. None of this is even possible for the proposed $38M.
