Historians will be using this speech to frame their analysis of this time, forever. The outcome of events of our time will depend on whether we have heard it, and understood it, and acted on it. Read the text! Even if you saw him deliver it and listened to all of it. Think on it!

Read the text of Biden's farewell speech! It's not a sound bite, it's as nuanced and spot-on an analysis of our present challenege as Lincoln's Cooper Union speech was. It's the wise call to action that we, the people, need right now.

Even Eisenhower's prescient warning about the military-industrial complex, which Biden's warning about emerging tech oligarchy and lying social media recalls, was not nearly as deep or insightful.

Biden's presidency will be judged for its many successes (in Ukraine, and domestically) and for its catastrophic failures (in Gaza, and re-election), but his wisdom and insight into the nature of our present existential challenge, as he leaves office, is without precedent.

Biden shows in this historic farewell speech that he understands our present peril better than any of us do, and more precisely than any other leader or commentator in the world.

This is the most consequential speech, addressed directly to the American people, by any president since JFK was inaugurated in January 1961. (Obama's speeches included, and Obama had some of Lincoln's power as an orator, while Biden doesn't.)
