13. Another favorite entry in the "women going to deranged lengths for eternal youth" genre is Fruit Chan's DUMPLINGS, and in this one the secret ingredient is cannibalism.

12. PONTYPOOL. Far and away my favorite interpretation of the zombie virus concept. It's better if you know nothing going in, so that's all I'm going to say about it.

11. ORPHAN. The cast makes this movie, in my opinion. It's worth watching for the scenes between Vera Farmiga and Isabelle Fuhrman alone, and it's wild that Fuhrman turned in a performance of that caliber at only ten years old.

10. THE DESCENT. I love this movie's refusal to identify itself, at least in the beginning. Is it a man-versus-man horror movie? Man versus the elements? A monster movie? It's kind of all of the above. And it contains one of the best jump scares I've ever seen.

9. A DARK SONG. A grieving mother enlists an occultist to help her contact her dead son. This movie is gorgeous, visually and narratively, and has one of the most stunning third acts I've ever seen.

8. Jordan Peele's class-conflict masterpiece (and my favorite of his movies), US. Lupita Nyong'o is at her best here, and so is Peele, in my opinion.

7. Only saw it last night but THE SUBSTANCE instantly earned a spot on my favorites list. When the force animating your world is your consumability and when your desire to prolong your shelf-life as a product overrides your self-preservation, the result is some spectacular (and funny) body horror.

6. In a similar vein, THE NIGHT HOUSE. Suicide, traumatic grief, and reckoning with the realization that you were married to a stranger. And more Rebecca Hall, whom I love.

5. THE GIFT by Joel Edgerton. You could probably quibble about the genre designation but I'm prepared to defend it. For me the pleasure of it is in the architecture of its central revelation: that you can share your life with someone and still have no clue who they are. Plus: Rebecca Hall.

4. Takashi Miike's AUDITION. This is the movie that turned me into a horror hound. A brutal critique of the transactional, commoditized way men are enculturated to view their intimate relationships with women.

3. HIS HOUSE dir. by Remi Weekes. Two South Sudanese refugees find their new home in England haunted by the violent past they fled. Some of the most stunning imagery I've seen in a recent horror film and a fucking incredible performance by Wunmi Mosaku.

2. IN MY SKIN by Marina de Van. Body horror that explores intimacy and detachment — from the self, from others — through its subject's (literally) consuming fixation on her own body.

1. Pascal Laugier's MARTYRS, an extended and bloody meditation on survivor's guilt, vengeance, and religious depravity.
