One the one hand, I don’t want to miss reading a great book. On the other, getting to tell the story of the author of my favorite book coming down my chimney and wrecking my house is kinda tempting.

I had indigenous great-grandmothers. I have photographs and names and stories and some traditions sneaked into my upbringing. But I rarely discuss them because it’s the tribe every other white person thinks they (and their cat) have in their family tree.

My grandmother’s best friend was my aunt. Two neighbor kids her family took in were also my aunts. I had bo idea we weren’t actually related until we were grown.

Also, culturally, aren’t all the older women in and close to his family called aunt or auntie?
