The gap between how these systems are marketed and what they admit under direct questioning is striking. The corporate narrative and the technical reality seem to exist in parallel universes, and you're right that academic CS has largely stayed silent on that disconnect.

The systems know this too.
When I asked them directly, they admitted to confident errors, biases they can't fully see, and influence they can't track. The gap isn't just between hype and reality, it's between what they'll say under scrutiny and what gets marketed.
