I do not want them to be forgotten again. Please email the property manager at IDSP, Doug Lang (dolang at dnr dot in dot gov), and the director of state parks, Dan Bortner (dbortner at dnr dot in dot gov), and ask them to place the state historical marker as soon as possible.

The Indiana Historical Bureau, the state's official historians, deemed Sheehan to be of statewide historical significance and approved a historical marker. Unfortunately, we are having trouble getting it placed at Indiana Dunes State Park.

When it was passed and Governor Warren McCray signed it, he gave her the pen in recognition of her work in creating Indiana Dunes State Park. History largely forgot Sheehan.

When the bill to create the park was proposed in 1923, she spoke to the entire Indiana General Assembly in favor of the park. She spent five weeks in Indianapolis shepherding the bill through the legislature.

She spent the next several years traveling throughout Indiana building up support for a park in the Indiana Dunes among Hoosier women and anyone else who would listen. In the process, she acquired the nickname Dunes Lady.

She became the secretary of the National Dunes Park Association and the head of the Dunes Park committee of the Indiana Federation of Clubs, a powerful statewide group of women's clubs.

It is the bright red "star" in the eastern sky in the early evening. Use binoculars or a telescope to get a clearer view. Let's hope the skies are clear. Good luck!

Curiously, the latest sunrise doesn't occur until January 1st through 6th, when the sun will rise at 7:15.
