I don’t know how you synthesized your caregiving experience for your dad so brilliantly, but from this side of your amazing essay, you did. It’s funny, honest, full of fury, and I felt exhausted by what you went through from your descriptions. Your level of detail is tremendous! I loved reading this, as hard as it was to take in the full story. Surely this will resonate with many caretakers who have had to contend with the messed up healthcare system we have.

Substack post from Jenny Quinlan: This piece had me from the first line about the cigarette and the watch, and didn’t let go. My mate recently told me he thinks I have PTSD from years of caregiving that ended in 2023, then read me the symptoms and I couldn’t really disagree. Therefore! I found this story cathartic, therapeutic and quite beautiful. Highly recommended - especially for the millions who care for aging parents in an era where things are very complicated.
