and frankly, it’s extremely easy. the only time I’ve ever “messed up” ice cream is when the freezer bowl wasn’t frozen properly so we just bought some ice cream and used the base we’d made as the milk in some unbelievably rich milkshakes.

should your poverty line get lower if your society starts providing free daycare in the same way it provides free k-12? I don’t think it should, personally.
it’s also true that it’s bad for a country to be car dependent. I also don’t think that should be a huge driver of your poverty measure!

mainly because—you only have to pay for childcare for like, 5 years per kid, max! so should we have different poverty lines on the order of tens of thousands of dollars for families with only school age children vs. ones with children 0-5?

that’s why Andor was such a surprise—Rogue One was pretty mid, and it was about a character only in that film that didn’t really leave much of an impression on anyone. and then Andor absolutely trampled

I’m an adult who got diagnosed at 30 and started adderall just a couple months ago. It’s been a huge help, and it’s also not a “stop having ADHD pill!”

idk. revealing of WSJ reporters’ familiarity with mental health treatment if one of their damning anecdotes is “well the treatment helped but it didn’t make the kid NOT have ADHD”

on top of the fact that if you’re receiving active treatment for a condition, your other conditions are more likely to be noticed than if you weren’t already receiving treatment. the genpop is more likely underdiagnosed for mental conditions since they’re not being monitored

the whole worry of this piece is that going on ADHD meds leads you to take other meds, which is assumed to be nefarious? ADHD has extremely high levels of co-occurrence with lots of mental illnesses so it’s extremely expected that more kids with ADHD have other stuff too vs the population

if I had known I had adhd as a kid and got adderall, so many things would have been half the difficulty or less. I can’t imagine denying that to my child

in both cases I think “abolish” is counterproductive, just as it is in “abolish private property.” marx did not mean that in the way normal people would interpret it. it wasn’t good that he used it and it’s not good that we keep using it. ill effects for those friendly to it and those hostile to it.

it’s like “abolish the wage form” to decommodify life. isn’t it better to just reduce average hours worked and “abolish” wages for those hours? similarly—a low poverty/inequality society that only requires social separation in good conditions for very few has “abolished” prison for almost everyone.

evangelical cultural criticism, even the better stuff, is pretty myopic. its focus on phones and social disconnection to me reads like people don’t have a very strong reading of the actual particularities of the society they live in or their own social location. where is any mention of, say, cars?

it’s not unimaginable to me that the executive just decides to fight ever distributing any snap funds even if the shutdown ends. if dems cave and that happens…so bleak
