Here's it in action, courtesy of the last pic I shaded. 1 to 4 are for shadows, as in the Art Spud example. 5 and 6 are highlights. I used overlay blending for 5 and Add (glow) for 6, and tweaked the opacity of those layers until I thought it looked good.

Here's a quick and dirty example of how I personally like to do it. First I make a new folder, fill a layer with a dark, low saturation colour (usually purple), paint white over the top of that layer, then set the folder blend type to "multiply".
