While I agree that coders could become developers or engineers, it doesn't happen automatically. I've seen far too many senior coders who passively waited to be told how to solve a problem.
Setting expectations and including a few real software engineers in the team helps in the mindset shift.

Believing for a few first years of my career that requirements collected by analysts are what customers really want. So much energy, creativity and time wasted on systems that no one wants.
