20th Saturday @trentbridge.co.uk Test in a row for me today. The things we've seen! The nonsense we've talked! The beer cup recycling systems we've navigated!

Sorry to hear about the death of John Fox, co-founder of Welfare State International and doyen of British community arts. His 2013 statement on the role of the artist remains an important read. Imagine a cultural policy based on that!

...but his diagnosis of the problems in HE - and especially the role of academic labour in any future solution to them - is quite compelling in my view.
This on 'soft automation' might resonate with anyone whose working day is taken up trying to get access to the systems they need to do their jobs.

There's some hubris and chutzpah in this piece. Not least this bit which reminds me of the time he was on the business news of the Today programme talking about the number of cranes on campus as if he was overseeing an Emirate...

Lots to ponder in this reflection from @christophersmith.bsky.social. Strong agree from me on this point about the need for Phd focussed on creative industries. IME (5 yrs site director for an AHRC DTP and 8 yrs as a DGS of a small creative-industries Unit in a bigger Faculty of Arts)...

I don't know what it is about working in a University, but I think about Harry Tuttle - the rogue heating engineer in Brazil who goes about secretly fixing stuff despite not having the right forms or permissions- a lot. I think he might be my hero.

If this was such an echo chamber, I'd expect to be reading a lot more Metro One Day Cup Final September scheduling outrage than I am.
