The Imperial Japanese Army and Navy filled their ranks on the promise of "all the *white rice* you can eat". The soldiers and sailors took up the offer so hard they gave themselves beriberi. Modern Japanese curry recipes come from IJN studies in how to treat that disease on ships.

If you actually got Amontillado, then I don't think you were in any danger. Enough brandy and other not-Amontillado to get you drunk? Then I'd be worried.

There is the T28/T95, but even that's burdened by practicalities like "the defense line we made this thing to breach has already been breached" and "how are we supposed to get this fat thing across the Atlantic?"

I'm definitely sympathetic to hopeless horror just meaning "here and now", but many people -- in Russia, Somalia, former Yugoslavia -- would object to your characterization of the 1990s. And of course before that you have nuclear war fears, before that the world wars, before that imperialism...

I fear there's a bit of sleight of hand being done by starting from Jan 25. Here is YouGov's information from Aug 24 to Feb 25. Note the massive swing on the 18-29 bracket. I would take this poll to indicate that age bracket's volatility, not left or rightism as such.

I've been listening to Gilbert and Sullivan operas on Youtube. I can sing When the Night Wind Howls now, at least?

Hang on, this robot girl is from Phantasy Star Online. That's a completely different continuity from Phantasy Star.

(Yes, I'm a nerd)

If it's any consolation, it's a joke--they're talking about their regular paper dictionary like it's a fancy new AI whiz bang gizmo. E.g. "217,000 parameters" = 217,000 words defined.

I'm in difficulties when it comes to critiques like this; in my head I'm between "I object, this is demeaning and objectifying to people who don't deserve it" and "I object, I'm not the target audience". For this story, where men in sexy situations is likely, would I read this unironically?

For the rest...
Dragon Pope
Cat Mafia
Mana/Bitcoin
Twitch
Inexplicable Republic
Beast Tamers

Clothing Optional (uh oh)
Pauldrons
Matriarchal weirdly
Dubious Military Uniforms
Arbitrary Restrictions
Goo Everywhere

"The Most Secure Sinecure" still works, I think (esp. with the pope option).

And honestly the only thing that's coming to mind is a Gilbert and Sullivan type opera, where the guild leader hasn't been out adventuring in decades to save his own skin.

"Stick close to your desks, and don't get killed/and you too may be the leaders of the Travelers' Guild!"
September 29, 2025 at 4:59 PM
Oh, so you get 7 qualities total, one each from each subsection plus one wild card.

Honestly the wild cards I rolled feel like they'd be suitable for a parody of the old British Navy, where captaincies only opened up as senior officers died. "Promotion by Blood; or, The Most Secure Sinecure".
September 29, 2025 at 4:51 PM
Just to clarify, what does the initial 1d6 roll affect? It looks like these tables only have the d66 component.

For me, I rolled 42--"Adventurer's Guild with a Highly Complex Internal Hierarchy and Ranking System"--and 66--"So, Like, Does Nobody Age in this World or Something?"
