It's everything. Internet & cable news culture, closely related. The incentives are for extremism and lies, & the human brain has proven incapable of resisting. This has been the distinguishing feature of the last two decades, which has coincided with the RW radicalisation of western politics.

The Ireland rugby team is a non-national, representative team (despite many in the ROI pretending otherwise). Its cricketing equivalent is akin to the West Indies in that regard, albeit only one island.

The formal answer is because the ROI split with the IFA post partition and formed their own association. The informal answer is that football being the world’s only genuinely global game doesn’t tolerate non-national, representative sides like rugby and cricket does.

Depends on whether it's schoolboy or pro, I suppose. But, generally speaking, the quality of tackling is phenomenally better in rugby. Football fans post videos like this and hardly anyone notices the crap defending.

Never fails to amaze me how football fans tolerate such dreadful defense.

He's a raving loon, long time far right, but lately it's in mental health territory. His FT opinion piece on the "the ‘apokálypsis’ of the ancien regime’s secrets" was proper batshit. Shame on any number of public intellectuals who have platformed him as a serious thinker.

To be fair, individual interpretation of the Bible is a fairly core tenant of Protestantism, at least. By definition, the majority of Christians in the US do not believe the Pope has unique interpretative authority.
