On my recent visit to the Pantanal
my group and I found this Ringed Kingfisher in near-perfect light with a darkly shaded background.

As I write this, I’m driving (well riding) down Brazil’s Transpantanera after several incredible days with Jaguars. Here are few early selects from the trip. 3 different jaguars and an ocelot.

Brown Bear searches for salmon in Lake Clark National Park. This is my favorite image from my recent “Fat Bears” workshop, the last trip of my Alaska season. Love this time of year, no crowds, autumn colors and portly bears.

Just wrapped up two weeks of photo workshops in Denali National Park. Denali may be my favorite place in the world for photography. And that’s saying something. Here are a few black and whites. #photography #denalinationalpark #alaska #blackandwhite #davidwshaw

Young leopard, last week in Botswana on the second of two safaris I led over the last month. Tired after a month abroad but elated at the photos and experiences my clients and I shared.

How’s the USA shitshow treating all of you?

Sunset saguaros. Trying to find some beauty in the ongoing dumpster fire.

Saguaro National Park, AZ. Visiting our national parks and public lands right now is like visiting a friend on their deathbed. I desperately hope they survive the next few years.

Backlight. My favorite kind of light.

All of these images are from my recent safari to Botswana's Central Kalahari Preserve and Magkadigkadi National Park.

Sunrise with a pride of lions was a highlight of my recent trip Botswana’s Central Kalahari.

I’m back in Johannesburg after 2 weeks exploring Botswana’s Kalahari on my inaugural photo tour of the area. The trip was full of unexpected things, but the volume of wildflowers in the Central Kalahari may have been the most unexpected.

In Johannesburg, South Africa right now. Tomorrow it’s off to the Kalahari. Can’t wait to see it again. Last time I was there, I don’t feel like I made the most of it, photographically. My images from that trip are lacking. This time around, I aim for more.

Hey folks, I'm a full-time professional outdoor photographer. I'm most interested in the thoughtful side of image-making, the philosophy of camera work, and art in general. Who should I connect with here on @bsky.app?

(I'm also interested in conservation, biology, and climate science.)

OK, GO!

Maybe I’m a cat person after all.

(I actually love cats, but photographing spotted cats? Yeah that’s hard to beat.)

This image is from a trip I led to the Pantanal in October. Pretty mind-blowing place.

Ever been?

Blue-fronted Parrot from the Pantanal in October.

Don’t get me wrong, the jaguars are awesome but I REALLY love neotropical birds. It had been a few years since I’d been to South America and seeing some of these guys was like reconnecting with old friends.

Great image! Love those guys. Got my first photos of them in Brazil in October.

My first post here on BlueSky!

I’m a professional photographer, workshop leader, and wilderness guide. I have a background in wildlife biology (masters degree studying birds and tropical ecology) but escaped research about 15 years ago to write, photograph, guide, and advocate for conservation.
