We have continued our study of twite using bird crops, planted for wintering finches, on the mull of Oa, Islay (now replicated on Shetland!)
Fewer birds on a failed crop and big weather this time, but much change since our first visit seven years ago.

A descent into a little visited bay on The Oa led to finding some impressive yellow meadow ant mounds and an abundance of dew moth caterpillars.

These wee Islay short-necked oil beetles must have just emerged in the last few days as some were only 7 or 8mm. A lot of growing to do to reach their beautifully bloated full size.
