Assistant Professor in International Relations at the University of Sussex (own views, obviously).
Interested in British (and Western) foreign relations in the Middle East and elsewhere, and how they're shaped by legacies of colonialism.
That mild-mannered Goldilocks sweet spot between being overtly racist and being against racism.

If that's your starting point then you're already highly susceptible to "radicalisation", or rather, the invitation to remove the mask, regardless of the wildly over-hyped factor of social media. 🧵

The US just played an indispensable role in facilitating a genocide. Mamdani was one of the leading, and very few high profile figures in US politics taking a clear stance against that. The trajectory of US politics on this issue is more consequential than that of Spain. It's not complicated

I searched in vain in this report for a single mainstream politician expressing an ounce of concern for the dignity and safety of the sizeable Muslim population in Aston and Birmingham.

The infamous '78 Granada interview was more representative of the actual position. The remarks about "swamping" referred specifically to people like the man in the poster, and to my own family.

Public support for Israel in the US is collapsing. This in spite of the relentless campaign of propaganda and McCarthyism waged by almost the entire US establishment. But the truth is the truth, humanity is humanity, and people can see it irrespective.

Cooper understands very well that it's not a question of "whatever words", as if words are arbitrary. Acknowledging the fact of the genocide would mean acknowledging her legal obligation to act meaningfully to prevent it. Her performance of concern for Palestinian children in this context is ugly.

Note the pernicious deployment of the term "identity politics", and who and what it is used to denigrate.

If the UK left's civil war of 2025 results in people who do this being consigned to the trashcan of the movement's history, that will be something, at least.

It's physically unsafe for people like me to go into the centre of our home city this Saturday on account of the colour of our skin.

Most politicians are either failing to stand up to this or actively contributing to the situation.

We don't owe any of those politicians our votes. Not one of them.

It's been a thoroughly grim week, and its a thoroughly grim time generally. So here's a thoroughly wholesome picture of two absolute legends to help rekindle your faith in the universe.

A sign of how badly the Vichy Labour era is going that even the party soft left have gone from vague expressions of concern to something approaching contempt.

Consider it a US-Israeli strike, given that Israel wouldn't and couldn't do it without the green light from Trump.

Empires can't last on force alone. They need allies and collaborators. The message here is that even Washington's *own allies* (Qatar is a *major* ally) aren't safe from its violence.

The power imbalance is relevant but clearly not the whole story. European states constantly violate their "values" in relationships when they're not subordinate, e.g. Israel and other ME regimes. Maybe in all these cases, the "values" aren't quite what they're cracked up to be?

As you read this you can almost hear the tramp of massed jackboots in the background. And no, he's not an exception or an outlier. This is the entirely representative face of the resurgent Anglo-American far right.

Our esteemed expert here appears to have gone from just innocently asking (in 2018) “Is Rising Ethnic Diversity a Threat to the West?” to answering (in 2025) that yes, the degenerate races pose an terrible threat to the herrenvolk and should be driven out en masse.

Its not 'a grift'. Its who he is.

To suppress opposition to a genocide (in this and other ways) is to collude with that genocide. This is particularly true in states like the US, UK and Germany where successful opposition could deprive the perpetrator of its key accomplices and enablers.

My instinct towards this party has been pretty sceptical, tbh. But what you say here is literally exactly what I've wanted us to do as a left for so long. Less of the disproportionate focus on retail politics & "comms". More on building grassroots power. Much easier said than done, of course!
