I believe that Boston’s signal design policy includes a requirement that NTOR be used at intersections adjacent to parks. Here’s a link to a draft - I think, though, it was finalized. See section 5.5(e)

Safer to use a wooden toothpick?

Not sure that’s the right conclusion. My guess is that our conditions (density, congestion, older non-grid roads, etc.) contribute a lot to the crash statistics.

I bet if folks from other states
drove here, their results would be similar.

All the same, it’s still something to be proud of!

Dave - Do you do anything special with your rain gauge in the winter? I started taking mine in for the season after a freeze caused it to crack and leak. (I didn’t trust myself to bring it inside and out with the forecast…)

Noticed that too - the opposite of the aurora a few weeks ago, where the photos were better than the real thing.

4 - I know this sounds like “What have you done for us LATELY?” so I will emphasize that many of us use and enjoy the Centre Street lanes. And the reduced traffic speeds make the street safer for everyone. More people would bike there if the lanes were consistently clear of cars and their doors.

3 - Without enforcement (how many tickets for bike lane violations have been issued in WR since the lanes went in a year ago?) or, better, physical barriers such as concrete or (second choice) flex posts, these lanes won’t fully serve their purpose.

2 - In West Roxbury, the Centre Street “protected” bike lanes are daily subject to the weak links of people using their cars to block the bike lanes or fill the painted buffer (allowing their passenger doors to reach into the lanes).

1 - This is wonderful for Back Bay and the South End. Re the “weakest link” concept, parked cars in bike lanes create weak links all the time in variable locations. It’s great that flex posts will be added here to reduce this driver behavior.
