How could No 10 let something like this happen? They will have had sign off on William's speech. They could have found the money to invest in the fund.

Just re-reading Kemi Badenoch's Conference speech, and isn't this bit just a bit funny? It's really not clear what the policy is on climate action - do they want to scrap the CCC? Carbon budgeting in general? or just Net Zero in particular? These lines are just slogans with no actions attached.

A voice very much needed at this event at Conservative Party Conference yesterday.

How much does it cost Drax to park their train at Edge Hill as everyone leaves Labour Conference?

The tone of this from the BBC. Khan 'Has not announced any plans' could so easily be ready as he has them, they just aren't public yet. The tone of rebuttal really should be so much more decisive.

Remembering fondly my interaction with Danny Kruger (Robert Jenrick's campaign manager, no less) at last year's Tory Conference. @adambienkov.bsky.social

Two losses, one lesson for Labour - there is a progressive vote to squeeze, fire up and get out to vote for you. It might not get you to 40 or 50% of the vote, but it could stop the rot. But need a pretty radical change of tone pretty soon or it'll be too late to bring them back.

Just once I wish Robert Jenrick wasn't utterly daft.

If he's genuinely worried about productive land being used for things other than food production he should be going after golf courses and pheasant shoots.

Last week of the summer holidays, nice warm weather, warm seas, fancy going for a swim?
South West Water says no.

Excellent proposal for the new devolution maps. Can see no problems with this.

Some irony in The Centre for Social Justice not providing a salary on their job adverts.

Problem with this position is that 'structural challenges facing UK public finances' have so little to do with the people who claim (or might in the future claim) PIP/UC. The disconnect between spending cuts & real people has been around a long time but it's right MPs oppose that logic of austerity

"Is it still possible to face the gathering darkness and say to the physical Earth, and to all its creatures, including ourselves, fiercely and without embarrassment, I love you, and to embrace fearlessly the burning world?"

Beautiful from Barry Lopez

Story of the times & the threat to climate ambition.
1. Terrible TBI report mostly ignored when published this AM - one bad write up in the Indy
2. Climate folk read it & complained on social media
3. Reform notice, Nigel comments
4. 'TB says Net Zero doomed to fail' 3rd headline on BBC News app
April 29, 2025 at 10:01 PM
Why not both?

If the TBI thinks the "environment movement" (from the National Trust, Green Alliance & WWF to Greenpeace & FoE) are protesters not pragmatists they're ignoring the detailed policy work these organisations do & the broad range of support they have

Seems Labour immigration policy is now this cartoon.

What is the mechanism by which illegal immigration drives down wages, terms and conditions?

Surely a party of organised labour could do something about that when in power.

A good excuse to use the best picture of me meeting a politician.

Even Michael Gove thought DRS was a good idea.

Anyone lobbying against it isn't worried about cost or inflation (it is by definition not inflationary, it's a deposit not a cost), they're just being plain old lazy.
March 28, 2025 at 11:28 AM
Yes, they are.

Climate criminals.

Get off here. Get down to the coast. You might see a seal.

An interesting line in the announcement on Drax subsidies.
I wonder if it might have been a good idea to have a review of the role of CCS and DACS *before* committing to spending £22bn on it...

Walked the coast path from Brighton to Lancing today. It's perhaps not the most beautiful, but walking through a port doesn't half make you think about everything that has to happen to make the world we've made actually work.

Seen today near Shoreham. Figures might need updating, but plus ça change.

Triple data centre capacity in 5 years? Easy, just a few tweaks to planning a permitting.
Triple renewables capacity in 5 years? Difficult, difficult, lemon difficult.

First thing I worked on in my first job in the environment sector in 2017 was the DEFRA Voluntary and Economic Incentives Working group, which recommended DRS to Michael Gove. Appropriate that it's my first post on BlueSky, and will only be 10 years late.
