THE COMPASS:
is, in fact, an early Luftwaffe model AK 39 "Armbandkompass". This wrist-worn model was made by Kadlec (a Prague-based company pressed in to service by Germany)

Oberleuntnant Ulf Lawaetz was a career officer who commanded U-672 from 6 April 1943 to 18 July 1944 when he ordered it scuttled after his brush with HMS Balfour. His career can be read up on here: uboat.net/men/commande...

The officer in question was at that time Wing Commander Harold Arthur Cooper Bird-Wilson ("Birdy") Birdy had been appointed to lead the Harrowbeer Spitfire Wing in June of '44. He had an exceptional and illustrious career.
