A good indicator that you’re on the right side of an argument is that you’ve annoyed someone who calls themselves the “Chinese Carl Schmitt” and they respond with a fully racist tirade. 😬

This directive also appears in “Document 10” of the “Xinjiang Papers” where cadres are directed to “strengthen positive propaganda” about the party-state’s relation to Islam and majority-Islamic minorities (e.g. Hui and Uyghurs) to “enhance” understanding of Islam.

We see this language used in key documents. For instance the China Islamic Association’s “Five Year Plan to Sinicize Islam 2017-2022” urges officials to “tell the China Story well” and describes how the Association can promote the story of sincization abroad www.chinalawtranslate.com/en/islamsini...

And then there are other mystifying inclusions. What the hell did Bhutan do? Or Kyrgyzstan and Turkmenistan? Or Cambodia? What strategic purpose does preventing citizens from these places serve? What is the point of excluding citizens of these countries other than racism?

Let’s be clear: this is not a “significant expansion.” This is a racist blanket ban. The proposal would effectively ban citizens from 55 different countries (including well over half of those in Africa!) from the US. What is the logic for inclusion on this list if not racism, pure and simple?

@htheaker.bsky.social and I have attempted to document and analyze this campaign comprehensively in our recent report. This is a reminder that there’s so much more that we need to know about this campaign. papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers....

Some really cool reading material in protest music in HK arrived in the mail today! Just flipping through, I already love all the illustrations and the inclusion of lyrics alongside the commentary. Really eager to jump right into them.

5) These stories also dispel the notion that the crackdown against Uyghurs, Kazakhs and other Muslims are a state of exception. As the article suggests, Hui have long been treated as “good” Muslims (not least by foreign media). This has always been a skewed and unhelpful characterization.

4) The stories also show the pervasiveness and breadth of the Sinicization. Much of the international media coverage focuses on coercive mosque renovation, the campaign also targets other means of religious expression: using Arabic, donating to Islamic charity, privately studying the Qur’an, etc.

3) The stories detailed in the article belie narratives put out by the party-state about the suppression of Islam being necessary for countering “extremism.” The actions being criminalized here are ordinary Islamic practices which have been stigmatized as “extreme” by cartoonish state rhetoric.
