Maybe eventually they'll get hired back when some of these AI experiments fail. In other cases, AI is the excuse for layoffs that would have happened anyway. But I think in many cases the pain is real.

We are ...but also I'm not sure that all the claims are false? Like, people doing low-stakes copywriting seem genuinely screwed. Management consulting firms are hiring way fewer junior people. I think even if the results are often slop, people all getting fired (or not hired) all the same.

Is it? They had a choice between aligning with their workers and aligning with the 900 lb gorilla that could smash them at any moment. They made a choice.

Apparently, this is not out of laziness or lack of budget. They say that automated systems are just too rigid to be able to handle all the different kinds of things that can happen underwater. It's one of the toughest environments imaginable for steady long term operation.
