Didn’t know this til visiting the Golf Museum at St Andrews yesterday- the Claret Jug presented every year is a replica and the original sits in a display case in the museum. Scheffler’s name not yet engraved on the original.

Few late silly Derby stats… Lambourn the 3rd Derby winner after the War be named after a place in England, after Blakeney and Morston… Ryan Moore has now got on the wrong one of OBrien’s as many times as he has won the Derby (four)… /1

Eurovision, Lockinge, Preakness, Cup Final. In descending order of anticipation. Said all the time by us oldies but how Cup Final day has fallen.

Remembering in 1991 McCririck saying that Toulon would’ve been the first Derby winner named after a place in France since Paris (1806). Pride of Arras looks set to be the next to try to right that wrong

I’m pleased to see Duffle Coat has scraped into the Grand National 34. Is this the first Grand National runner to a share a name with the previous Grand National runner since Royal Mail? I’d think so but happy to stand corrected.

Inothewayurthinkin - I would probably do a Garrison Savannah and go for the National while he’s still at the top as he doesn’t strike me as a horse who will win multiple Gold Cups and thus should be wrapped in cotton wool with that aim. Noble Yeats was a 7yo so that age is no bar any more.

What seems clear now at the top of the trainers’ tree in Ireland is that Mullins remains unhealthily dominant but Elliott, formerly rivalling WPM, is now only level with de Bromhead and the up and coming Cromwell in the next three…

Inothewayurthinkin. Probably the silliest name ever to win a Gold Cup. Only challengers Al Boum Photo, L’Escargot and Cottage Rake (what is a cottage rake?)

Having the Mares Chase now is like having that Arab race on Arc Day. Time to empty the dishwasher and make a cuppa. #CheltFest #CheltenhamFestival

Entertaining day today, much better than the deflating day 2 of a year ago. Champion Chase again ruthless in exposing the favourite’s flaws as it has done frequently over the last 10-15 years. Pre-festival Jonbon had seemed the grade 1 odds on chance most likely to come undone and so it proved…

There’s no runner in the X-Country I haven’t heard of. Almost feels like a veterans chase, which I suppose it is in a way #CheltFest #CheltenhamFestival

Couple of reflections - surely the most incredible CH today in the race’s long history - though thanks to @arkle1964.bsky.social for the reminder of the 1939 race - & of course 2019 was very comparable with the 3 protagonists all failing to make the frame, though not quite the shock value of today..

Tuesday the best day of the #CheltenhamFestival for the armchair viewer. Only day Racing TV aren’t alternating coverage with some s*** at a gaff track. No need ever to “do a Lossiemouth” and switch to ITV.
March 11, 2025 at 12:27 PM
Will any fellow Racing oldies who have seen it all before go on precedent as much as anything when having a poke next week? For example, Brighterdaysahead can’t win the CH because Apples Jade won some trial by a street a few years ago then flopped in the CH? And going further back in time…

His love of his horses really shone through on TV. Will never forget his worried “That green field is waiting” interview in the saddling area before One Man’s fateful last run. Or his tearful interview before Neptune’s GN. RIP
Rest in peace, John Hales.

The Grand National and Champion Chase-winning owner has died at the age of 85.

Many fine horses carried his famous silks and trainer Paul Nicholls paid tribute to "a great man, fantastic owner and friend. He will be missed by so many in racing.” 🕊️

So at the DRF according to current odds on the attheraces cards, 20 of the 25 horses showing at under 10-1 in all the Grade 1s are trained by WP Mullins. Depressing.

Not a boxing fan but was engaged by Usyk v Fury, so listened to the last few rounds last night. I must say I was hugely impressed by the commentary of Ronald McIntosh - incredible to describe the level of detail he does in such a fast moving sport. Sounds like a man at the top of his game.

No surprises but good to see 3 contemporary songs in the Xmas top 5 including Gracie Abram’s excellent chart topper That’s So True hanging on at no.2 in what has been a fine year for light and listenable pop in the top 40

Nice to have Ariana Grande back in the top 40 but a bit of a departure for her innit, Defying Gravity, after stuff like 34+35 #Wicked
