Swindon, September 2025
A view of a car park over pass. A high rise building can seen in the background. On the right hand side of the frame is a bush and on the left is a fence. There was a vague smell of wee. A view looking upwards - a fairly vacant looking building with an old British Rail sign at the top. Felt more like the 1970s and less like the 2020s. Vague smell of coffee - Costas nearby. A word looking clock outside the train station - like a ball stuck in a tree. I’ve already mentioned the coffee smell. A view towards the bus station - now deserted. People can seen walk through an alleyway between the bus station and an office block. No doubt going to wait for buses that will never arrive. Very strong smell of wee and weed.

Some photographs from my on going occasional sometimes project about wandering around beaches every now and then. I might call the project ‘Shoreline’ but maybe not…..
Some elaborate metalwork in silhouette against a plain bright sky. Two bits of wood - might’ve been something else (didn’t check) - emerging from the sand and water. A pair of razor shells on the sand. Sometimes referred to as razor clams (I did not know this). The posh name for them is Ensis magnus.

Dabbling with the non urban......Aberavon Beach, October 2023
A across the beach at Aberavon, Port Talbot. Looking from left to right the sky starts clear and as we look across the cloud builds up significantly, darkening as we look right. The sand is firm and it looks like the tide has recently gone out - streaks of water run towards the tide. In the distance, whiter clouds can be seen, a promise of a brighter day lurks within. A solitary figure can be seen walking on the beach, no doubt enjoying the serenity of nature's bounty.

Framed by the outline of a vacant and shuttered shop, there stands a man with a push chair in the right hand side of the frame, looking left towards two people approaching him. One is on a mobility scooter whilst the other walks. They're slightly indistinct due to a low shutter speed which gives the impression that they are moving at speed. The man who they are approaching is stock still, frozen in time. A dreary view towards what was once the Co-op and subsequently what was once Wilko. A road snakes up the middle of the frame towards said empty shop. A row of cars is picked out by the fact and miserable light. On the right of the frame stands a typically bland block of flats, whilst on the left there is the indoor market, which itself is closed now. A quiet side street, more flat dreary light and just visible in a door way on the left someone is smoking a cigarette whilst blowing on their phone - maybe an employee from the nearby pub having a break from all the day drinkers.

From an elevated position, looking down into a partially flooded car park. The standing water acts like a mirror and reflects an overcast sky. In the foreground there are metal posts whilst in the background there is an expanse of parked cars and some lampposts.

Unreal car crashes. No one was hurt.
Three cars in a pile up outside what looks like a bank. Two of the cars are interlocked head-on whilst a third lies on top of them both. No one was hurt. Three cars smashed into each other. Beyond lies the city across a still body of water. The sky is cloudy but calm. No one was hurt. Flipped on its roof outside an office block lies a car. Weak light bleeds from its single functioning headlight. No one was hurt.

The viewpoint looks down from an elevated position into deserted street. Terraced houses can be seen to the left of the frame and in the distance what looks like a leisure centre. Running diagonally across the foreground of the image is a fence and stood by the fence is a man walking through the frame from left to right. He has his back to the camera but his mop of white hair is visible. He's wearing a rain coat which is fitting given the damp looking conditions.

An interior of Neath indoor market. Centrally in the frame is a showroom mannequin without clothes but sporting a wig. In front of it are crates and in the immediate right hand foreground this is a display cabinet full of toy cars (still in their boxes). In the background there is a steel pillar (complete with exposed rivets) and next to that is a man with his back to the camera.

The man is framed within that window. He looks isolated despite there being other people around. The mode is what I'd call somber.

Milford Haven, Wales - 'Yma/Here' (38A)
An ambiguous and extensive examination of the urban topography of South Wales and the West of England from 2016 to 2018.
A general street scene. In the immediate foreground and to the right of the photograph is a flat cap wearing older gentleman with a walking stick. He's resting by a railing having climbed a hill that's just out of shot. In the background and also on the right of the frame is a woman striding across the road, and behind her are some parked cars and a row of houses. On the left hand side of the frame is a shop called Hannah's, which if I remember correctly, is a hairdressers. The sky is moderately cloudy with a chance of rain. It's Wales - there's always a chance of rain.

Gloucester, England - 'Yma/Here' (34, 35 & 36)
An ambiguous and extensive examination of the urban topography of South Wales and the West of England from 2016 to 2018.
Slightly angry looking older woman on a mobility scooter coming out of the sun and heading to the left of the photographer. The general scene is that of a wide and mostly empty street with a few trees in the background. The low sun and lack of leaves on said trees suggest it's winter. Sprayed on a brick wall around the back of a multi-storey car park are the word, 'Mad World' in capital letters. There is a touch of lens flair. Looking down a darkened passageway we see a little silhouette of a man (Scaramouche, Scaramouche, will you do the Fandango) moving away from the camera. A weak light picks out his outline and he casts a long shadow. Having quoted the lyrics of Freddie Mercury and I feel there's not much more I can say about this photograph.

Looking out towards the street, a man and a woman are framed by two stone pillars which are supporting an archway. Another man walks into frame looking warily towards the photographer. Looking towards the building in the first photograph we see a selection of people walking in different directions yet, more or less, evenly spaced - like I've just caught the tail end of some flash mob happening.

An ambiguous and extensive examination of the urban topography of South Wales and the West of England from 2016 to 2018.
The light picks out the end of a building as a car enters the frame. Also pick out in the light are three figures hurrying along the pavement. The lower half of the photograph is deep in shadow. Beyond the horizon there are clouds. The sun hangs low in the sky, illuminating half the scene with bright winter sun whilst the other half is in shadow. A man enters the frame from the left picked out in silhouette - he is part of a triplet of shadows along with some street signs.
