Almost! The subscription price was just a pittance compared to the ad dollars. Most papers likely could have survived by being free, but having a nominal fee proved to advertisers that the paper was a product people valued and this worth advertising in.

True BUT the fact that right wing news has been able to dominate in part because its free is something that needs to be addressed.

No, I kept being spammed by folks who didn't have anything in their portfolio remotely like what I was clearly seeking, or they asked to DM me. Shady!
