No, he said "every time they short us, we are just tripling down on getting the better numbers and honestly to make them poorer". If you short a company you are betting that its stock price will fall in the future. All he's saying here is "fuck the haters" basically

This album is outrageously good and criminally slept on. Listen to Indian and tell me you don't hear a hit there www.youtube.com/watch?v=zCQO...

Literally the first rock album to hit no. 1 this *decade*, "rock and roll is alive and well" is not really my takeaway from this

For a lesser-seen one that's great check out Smooth Talk (1986 grand jury prize winner + teen Laura Dern)

Not denying that at all, just pointing out that many of his contemporaries were even worse!

I am far from a Christgau fan but I do think this is a fairly reductive take on him. He was frequently wrong and often biased but *far* from the standard-bearer of rock critic chauvinism that this piece makes him out to be. This is him attempting to grapple with the subject in 1970(!)

"Without what seems to be Joel’s humanism to leaven what appears to be Ethan’s misanthropy, the residue left at the bottom of this cup is bitter to the point of repugnant" holy mixed metaphor, why wouldn't you say sweeten instead of leaven

Not trying to be standoffish here. I guess there's just something unsettling to me about the contrast between how society should treat children in the abstract vs. you personally day-to-day. "I think kids should be cared for and want nothing but the best for them, now please get them away from me"

Unpopular counter-take - If you say you dislike a whole group of people and don't want to be around them, it's hard to believe you actually want the best for them. Usually genuine concern and care for others is accompanied by being tolerant of them and being okay around them sometimes

From that piece -"But at that time, photography—similar to AI models today—was extremely expensive, difficult to use, quite inaccessible, and largely the domain of technocratic and well-funded institutions."
Huh? Literally anyone can use an AI model for free right now, how is this an apt comparison

Even funnier when you learn that around 80% of the early writers were Harvard grads (not an exaggeration)
