From an opinion piece that I failed to place. The TLDR is that the segment of the population with the most elastic political identities- younger people- took on the chin economically the last 4+ years- and swung away the party in power. Even educated, younger women swung towards Trump.

So, what did we find on the demographics? First, it's much more used by young people. This matters distributionally (young people are losing one of their dominant platforms for speech), but also because young people will always lead the way to changes online.

And, surprise surprise, Meta dominates the existing "attention market" among social media/messaging platforms, controlling about half of the market. Alphabet controls almost half of the remainder, and TikTok half what's left after Meta and Alphabet.

Usage patterns for social media has been remarkably stable for the last 4 years. Chalk one up for network effects and incumbent advantage. TikTok is the main challenger that has emerged over the last 5 years to the big platforms.

First, TikTok is used by a lot of people in the US. About 40% of adults in the US use TikTok; bigger than X (28%) or Reddit (23%), a notch smaller than Instagram (50%) & much smaller than FB (80%). It was very fast growing, but has plateaued over the last 2 years or so.
