Finally got around to seeing my first Red-flanked Bluetail today, with the fairly long-staying bird at Margate Cemetery popping out of the shadows just enough for a couple of CCTV-style mugshots. Bonus albino squirrel too.

Decided to reward my hard work with a visit to the long-staying Kurdistan Shrike (now gone) at the Lovecraftian-sounding Dunwich Heath, Suffolk, at the end of last week. Sometimes rare birds are pretty good-looking! Bonus Dartford Warblers too (one of which mobbed the shrike).

In the grand tradition of poor gig photos, here's Robert Forster in the middle of an epic 'Draining the Pool for You' tonight at the Union Chapel. New LP songs sounded good too.

Unlike DPD etc, The Ex always deliver. And so it was at Cafe Oto tonight. I'd like to recommend you to go to the next two nights but they've justifiably sold out. New LP sounds great.

Look closely at this amp and you can see there is a clear instruction to tonight's audience at The Lexington with Luke Haines and Jowe Head. Come down - it'll be fun!

If you live in or near Swansea, you'll be just recovering next Sunday after attending my show on the Saturday (20 September) at the Tangled Parrot record shop, after a stunning support set by Peiriant, won't you? Come along to confirm my prescience!

Marvellous morning at Great Wigborough, Essex, watching my first Arctic Warbler in the UK for more than 20 years, along with bonuses: 2 Pied Flys (one pictured), 4 Spot Flys, Hobby, Spoonbill, 2 Greenshanks, etc. Also cracked the 200 marker on my #SEYearList2025 tally.

Recently, with a few gorgeous migrating Whinchats at Rainham Marshes, the world's most distant Stone Curlew at Cliffe Pools, & Arctic Skua (pictured) & Sooty & Balearic Shearwaters during a seawatch at Dungeness yesterday, my #SEYearList2025 is now on 198 species, despite interruptions. Roll on 200!

Here's a heads up that I've now got a monthly 4-page column in Bird Watching magazine, neatly tieing in with my own plans to reach a comfortable 200 species in the South East this year. The latest is just out and available in bigger newsagents:
