While John Singer Sargent, born on this day in 1856, is best known for stunning society portraits, he had a much broader range, as in the watercolors he made as a war artist in WWI like this image of harvesters seemingly oblivious to the crashed warplane behind them www.iwm.org.uk/collections/...

A boat is painted sitting on a calm, slightly agitated harbor water that is reflecting a small dock/pier with some structures on top of that dock. There’s a gray/purple mountain in the background. This is the Santa Barbara Harbor painted on Christmas Eve in California, and has a very still, calming palette as it was the end of the day, and the day was a quiet, chilly, partially cloudy day.
