I detest the use of "believe in" when it refers to science. Astronomers don't "believe in" dark matter, it exists, because it has a measurable effect. The nature of that something is subject to ongoing investigations, but in the meantime, it has been given the name Dark Matter.

I'm.guessing the word "riding" is used to mean "constituency" borrowed from the old English term, thirding (a ⅓ part) which evolved into the later usage of "ridings" for the 3 regions ((North, West and South) that formed the County of Yorkshire.

Well, it seems that writing an X in the box against your chosen candidate's name with a thick, black pencil, like we do in the UK, is waaaay too complicated for some people, so they have to use complex technology instead.
