Both of these forces them to really know their material. My classes are in the social sciences and have about 6-10 students.

I do two main assessments for my grad courses: Melbourne Method for discussions of text, this puts the responsibility on them to really know the material; and for the midterm and final assignments, I have them conduct an interview with a text’s author, and then edit these as social media content.
