This doesn't happen every day.

Free speech isn't and shouldn't be a matter of left v. right. It's among the most fundamental of American values.

it looks like the entire city of Chicago is shooting fireworks tonight. You love to see it. Happy Fourth!

Happy Fourth! I love these words from Washington Square in Philadelphia: "Freedom is a light, for which many men have died in darkness."

The years pass, but the memories never fade. I think of these men every day, but especially this day.

Rest in Peace.

I had a great conversation with Rory Stewart on what it's like to be a conservative opposing the new right in the UK. Here's part of his answer, and it absolutely resonates with how MAGA treats its conservative foes:

Dear authoritarian adviser: "Process" is how we find out if someone is actually here illegally:

This is the top comment on my piece, and it also encapsulates how I feel:

My friend @davidlat.bsky.social just published an email Paul Weiss chair Brad Karp sent to the firm. This excerpt is the most chilling. This is how constitutional republics die -- when rivals see a violation of fundamental rights not as an injustice, but as a business opportunity:

This is a key insight from @jvl.bsky.social and one of the reasons why you can't count on Trump's approval rating to go down when he does unpopular things. No, Trump has such a hold on the GOP that when he takes an unpopular position, he makes it popular.

This is a direct attack on the First Amendment. Regardless of how you feel about DEI, teaching any element of it is protected by the First Amendment. This is a federal prosecutor attacking the curriculum of a private Christian college. Inexcusable.

It didn't take long for our new Director of National Intelligence to start spouting Russian propaganda. What a shameful lie.
March 1, 2025 at 5:49 PM
t's not just that Trump has a flawed strategic vision (lots of presidents have had flawed strategies), it's also that he's full of malice and spite towards Ukraine. So he will lie and lie and lie. This is a Russian propagandist's dream:

This man is one of Marco Rubio's newest hires at the State Department. It's hard to even comprehend the mindset that says that he's qualified to represent the United States in any capacity at all.

Went to the Hans Zimmer concert in Nashville tonight. Incredible. The amount of talent on the stage was unreal.

There isn't a plan. There's no nine-dimensional chess. He's not a mastermind. He's an angry man drunk on his own power, picking stupid fights for no reason, all to demonstrate "strength." There's no defense for this.

I went over to the bad place to confirm . . . this is a real tweet from the 2022 GOP nominee to be governor of Pennsylvania. Absolutely nuts. I don't know what's worse -- the disinformation or the ignorance. This is Star Wars! You should know a Tie Fighter when you see one! Good lord.

The argument below bothers me.

"It will never be enough for the woke mob" is the wrong metric. Caitlin Clark shared her own views on how much Black women have contributed to the success of the NBA. She happens to be right. Who cares what any "mob" thinks, woke or anti-woke.

If you want to know why so many Americans are skeptical of campus DEI bureaucracies, this is one reason. They often violate their own stated values by demonstrating their own bigotries. The campus reaction to Oct. 7 has made that abundantly clear. www.nytimes.com/2024/12/12/u...

Dear Senators, do your job.

And what is your job when it comes to Trump's appointments? Let's ask Alexander Hamilton. (From Federalist 76) avalon.law.yale.edu/18th_century...

When you live in a town that was the site of a Civil War battle, you never know when Abe Lincoln and a platoon of Union soldiers will show up :)
