I find my artwork going in strange directions. Not what I expected at all! I think I'm going to have to enroll in a course on Jungian archetypes. Lots of serpents, tracks, circles, and strange, dark figures. I'm beginning to understand where petroglyphs come from. :-) #art2life #ArtYear

I've had Gudy Gaskill on my mind lately. Gudy's dream and vision was the Colorado Trail. She was a woman who refused to accept what was "impossible," and by force of will made her dream of something lasting to her and to future generations come true. I hope we can keep Gudy's legacy alive!

Although I (for reasons unknown even to me) have resisted it, most travelers on the Colorado Trial use a trail name. By tradition a trail name is assigned to you on the trail by a member of your traveling party for a quality, or a quirk, or a foible, or at least some notable aspect (usually a weakness) of your character. In some ways, I think, it reinforces the notion that there are few social masks on the trail and that we are all equal before the vicissitudes of the trail. Something I believe in strongly. Because trail names are often assigned on the basis of a raucous night in a trail town, or a moment's inattention, or God knows what other evil fortune might have befallen someone, some people choose their own trail name. Hawkeye, shown here in a sketch from the trail, chose his own trail name because he was fascinated with the character otherwise known as Natty Bumppo in The Last of the Mohicans. That, and as he told me, "If I let someone else name me, I'd almost certainly be known as Never Shuts Up!" One of my favorite trail interviews! 🙂
