Speaking from experience here - born in Canada then moved to the US at 12. You are absolutely correct in your assumption. The War of 1812 is very much skimmed over in US History classes. It is taught, but only briefly. The Civil War, WWI and WWII, and Vietnam War are covered much more in-depth.
