One possible explanation is that ex-servicemen poppy sellers on the high street are sadly dying out. The only place I could find poppies on sale locally was in a fishmongers. Oddly none of the three supermarkets was selling them.

Young readers in that pre-snacking era were often hungry during the day, and a hearty feast would be shorthand for success and achievement, just as a slippering or beating by cane would be a concise visual punishment. 'Slap-up' has obscure origins in the 19th century.
