Schools in England pay around £200m a year into the apprenticeship levy.

They use around £42m a year.

With accredited programs for TAs and teachers, and excellent qualifications for leadership, school leaders must address this funding opportunity with more enthusiasm.

Something overlooked in the private schools debate:

I know a boy whose parents can no longer afford the fees. He’s year 6, so moving to a secondary school in September.

He has an excellent school 500 yards from his home, but that school has de-prioritised him in favour of kids from feeder schools.

It seems as though NPQ funding will continue to be reduced as the new government seeks an off ramp for the qualifications.

This is no surprise as, despite enormous gov funding, they have clearly not delivered on any of the issues they should have addressed, such as leader retention and succession.

RISE is a huge opportunity to create a collaborative sector-led system of school improvement, but the focus must be on training school leaders at all levels to deliver improvement projects in a Total Quality Management approach.

The landlord economy is the biggest driver of the asset economy, which is widening wealth inequality. Landlords are puppets for banks, bearing the risk of every deal and so driving higher rents. It’s a highly unethical system, normalised by Homes Under the Hammer etc.

Rent controls are necessary.
The average cost of renting a newly let UK home is now £3,240 higher than in 2021.

Rents have risen by 27% since 2021, wages haven't.

People priced out of buying/renting homes.

No govt plan to curb profiteering by builders, landlords, banks.

There are so many reasons to improve teacher working conditions, and one of them is it's positive impact on student attainment.

Look through the aspects of teacher conditions which our 2021 working paper suggested align best with improved attainment, then read the whole paper here: tdtrust.org/coi/

Controversial view:

If 25% of all kids went to private school, state school per pupil funding would rise to over £11k.

If private school fees were capped at £12k pa instead of taxed, we could achieve the 25% and close the privilege gap.

We need more parents paying for private schooling.

The new Level 5 Specialist Teaching Assistant Apprenticeship could be a game-changer for schools.

Recent surveys show that TA recruitment and retention is the biggest challenge for school leaders.

If you’re not spending your levy contributions on training like this, you’re part of the problem.
