Polisci PhD now doing the alt-ac thing. Views are my own.
Correction, 106 loss Royals teams. They weren’t even the best at being bad.

Never had it! I’m an I-70 corridor guy, that’s one that never opened a northern outpost (afaik).

It’s entirely possible that Spangles is actually still good and their terrible commercials just incepted people into thinking it’s bad

Tbh nobody under the age of like 34 should be watching that. Does Gen Z even know who Connie Chung is, or why the thought of her as a ruthless ice climbing partner is humorous?

Overlapping / slightly north of Whataburger territory:

Braums is elite

Freddy’s is elite

Culver’s is excellent

Spangles is trash

Steak n Shake is inconsistent but very strong on its best day

Maybe mid-90s? Star Wars toys were having a big resurgence due to the remastered original trilogy release. Legos were at their peak. Video games were a big deal but I feel like the volume of games wasn't enough to crowd out analog toys until the N64/PS1 generation.

I must be in your house because why else would I be finding evidence that these are real

Absolutely. Hitchens was one of the strongest supporters of the Iraq War in all of media and died in 2011 without ever really wavering. Hard to imagine how a supposed champion of rationality could be so wrong unless something like deep antipathy toward Muslims was clouding his judgment.

Counterpoint: if he’s addicted to sports gambling, he probably isn’t investing huge amounts of time revising his previously successful election model

Counter-counterpoint: if he’s betting on politics he’s absolutely juicing the model to create opportunities to buy low

I agree, but can we admit that the video is amazing? Lichtman seems to be racing against Trump and Harris? And have any other election forecasters gotten a shirtless photo of themselves into a NYT video? I don't think so.

Everything from the team that runs Federal Donuts is great! K'Far for pastries and bagel sandwiches. Goldie for falafel. Laser Wolf for kebabs.

Zahav is phenomenal but really hard to get a table. I think they have a few walk-in seats but you have to get in line very early.

Seems like he attributes a lot of his success to contrarianism when it was actually the fact the he was using an established statistical framework applied reasonably well. Now he’s still contrarian but using dumb concepts that he made up or misapplying existing concepts.

There is a chapter on terrorism and the expert source he interviews is Donald Rumsfeld!

Imagine being someone who learned about the Central Park bear mystery in real time. What a spectacular payoff.
