Mamdani winning really was seismic insofar as it means that there is a real, viable, and popular alternative to the sclerotic leadership of Schumer, in particular, who of course did not endorse the NY mayor-elect.

And obviously yesterday suggests that a full-scale Trump realignment hasn’t crystalized, either. (The only cautionary note being that the Democrats did exceedingly well in the 2022 midterms but got wiped out two years later, so there’s nothing locked in here necessarily)

2016 was supposed to cement the Obama realignment; didn’t happen. 2020 was supposed to cement the Trump realignment; didn’t happen. 2024 was supposed to be the final death knell of Trumpism; didn’t happen.

I saw Matt Duss saying this on Twitter, and I agree with him and trust him -- he's a good, committed lefty progressive. But unity is a two-way street and there should be consequences for the degree to which the New York Democratic Party mobilized against Mamdani.

Thought provoked by pulling a book off of my shelf in a student meeting to recommend to a student and telling them "I dislike this person intensely on a personal level for XYZ reasons but this book is worth reading."

It definitely puts a dent in the MAGA invincibility myth and has raised questions about the depth of elite support for the cause.
