The first century began on 1 January in the year 1, so the second century began 100 years later on 1 Jan 101. The third began 100 years later on 1 Jan 201... and so on until the 21st century began on 1 Jan 2001, 24 years ago.

True, but not really relevant as the OP was referring to the 21st century, not the 2000s.

It's a matter of historical record that there was no Year 0. The year 1 BC/BCE was followed immediately by the year AD 1 / 1 CE. So the first century AD began on 1 January 1 and ended 100 years later on 31 December 100.

Made it to about two o'clock yesterday, then put on the radio in the car and idly flicked to a different station than normal. Mortified. #whamageddon
