Also ur correct in that they help mark exciting parts, think about sounds that get your attention, a loud high pitched crash is prob p high on the list

No cymbals will give your music kind of a muted spooky feel, see the Peter Gabriel album 3 and the Phil Collins song ‘In the air tonight’ for prominent examples. Theyre good for dividing the beat, and when you let them run over the bass/tom can create interesting tonal combinations
