This is the Potala Palace in Lhasa. It sits some 130m above the Lhasa River valley and dominates the area. The palace is the religious home of the exiled Dalai Lama and a major pilgrimage site for Tibetan Buddhists. #potalapalacelhasa #DalaiLama #LhasaTibet #RoofoftheWorld

Travelling from Xi’an to Lhasa involves a 26 hour train journey on a high altitude railway line. The train climbs to an altitude of 4000m and passenger cabins are fitted with oxygen outlets. Access to Lhasa is restricted and passengers need a travel permit before being able to join the train.

The next stop on my China journey was a visit to Xi’an’s Terracotta Army. The Mausoleum of the first Qin Emperor is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The 2,200 year old army, discovered in 1974 by a farmer while ploughing his fields, was created to protect the Emperor in his after life. #travelblogger
This is the entrance to the Mausoleum. Being a major international attraction it gets very busy a peak times. Despite the commercial feel of the entrance area, with its associated coach parks and fast food outlets, the inner area of the site is respectfully presented and well maintained. The Terracotta Army itself is displayed in a series of three large aircraft hanger type buildings. Each of which is designed to preserve the artefacts in their original position and protect them from erosion. This shows a number of the original warriors, standing in regimental formation. In reality, when found, many of the warriors and their horses were damaged and broken into many fragments. Painstaking work was necessary to restore the exhibits for display. This work is also still continuing. This is another view of part of the army. So far some 2000 warriors and their horses have been excavated and made ready for display. It is thought however that the original army numbered some 6000 pieces. Much work is therefore still to be done in uncovering the whole site.

Hongcun is a UNESCO World Heritage site in Yi County, Huangshan City, Anhui Province, China.
It dates back 900 years and comprises of over 130 Ming and Qing dynasty residences. The South Lake and Moon Pond, shown below, have been immortalised by photographers as part of China’s historic past.

The Danish royal family have their very own Royal Guards to look after them, complete with furry hats, rifles and bayonets – God, standing on point duty outside the palace for hour after hour must be one of the most boring jobs out there. It hardly fits the hype around joining the armed forces and seeing the world. It’s more like, join the armed forces and let the world come and look at you. The Amalienborg is the palace home of the Danish royal family and is situated just off the Waterfront area in Copenhagen. For all the talk about the Danish royal family living a much more modest life style than our British monarchs, the Amalienborg still looks to me to be a cut above your typical family residence. Nonetheless, like our own royal family, they seem to be doing a pretty good job in attracting tourists to their home, albeit not perhaps as popular as the bars in Nyhavn. This is Frederik’s Church. It seems like, not to be outdone by the neighbouring Royal residence, the Evangelical Lutheran movement (the Danish State Church) had to construct its own building just to the north of the Royal Palace. This building is known locally as the ‘marble church’ on account of much of it being built of marble. Apparently, although its construction was first proposed in 1740, it was not completed until 1894 due to funding issues – Gaudí‘s Sagrada Família in Barcelona is not unique then in its construction time scale. This is the Waterfront area. The old Port Authority Building in Nordre Toldbod is shown on the right and the two small pavilions on the left are used by the Royal Family when crossing the harbour to board HDMY Dannebrog, the Royal Yacht.

An interesting poster by Netto highlighting the high cost of living in Denmark. Seen in the vicinity of Kongens Nytorv in central Copenhagen. As an alternative to walking along Strøget with its named retail offerings, the narrow streets to the southeast, between Strøget and Gammel Strand, are much more interesting. These streets are packed full of local shops and a wide variety of restaurants and bars. This photo shows some of the prominent buildings in the vicinity of Kongens Nytorv in central Copenhagen. This poster, seen covering much of the south western face of the French Embassy at the corner of Kongens Nytorv and Bredgade, is a brilliant example of self promotion. It exploits the building’s free ‘advertising space’ to promote the culture of France. I wonder if they needed a planning permit to put it there.
